Short answer
You do not need another app for ordinary HEIC-to-JPG conversion. In Finder, select your HEIC files, choose Quick Actions → Convert Image, set JPEG and the image size, then convert. Use Preview if you need an export quality slider, or NeatClick when the next step is a size target or batch cleanup.
Option 1: convert a batch in Finder
- 1
Select the actual image files
In Finder, Command-click individual HEIC files or select a range with Shift. If they are in iCloud, wait for them to download. Files inside the Photos library need to be exported to a folder first.
- 2
Choose Convert Image
Right-click the selection → Quick Actions → Convert Image. Choose JPEG. Select Actual Size when you want the original pixel dimensions, or choose a smaller offered size if appropriate.
- 3
Choose metadata and convert
Review Preserve Metadata before converting. If you need to remove specific sensitive information, verify the output rather than assuming the checkbox covers every privacy requirement. Click Convert to JPEG.
- 4
Inspect the JPEG copies
Check that you have the expected number of outputs and open a sample. Keep the HEIC originals. JPEG files may be larger than HEIC files even when they look similar.
Option 2: use Preview for one image
If Convert Image is absent from the menu, Preview provides another built-in route.
- Open the HEIC file in Preview and choose File → Export.
- Set Format to JPEG, adjust Quality, and give the output a different name. Save it to an easy-to-find folder.
- Compare the saved file’s size and appearance with the source. Lower quality only as much as the destination requires.
When to use NeatClick instead
For basic conversion, the built-in method is enough. NeatClick is useful when the same selection also needs a file-size limit, a precise width, or location cleanup.
- Select the HEIC files in Finder and choose the JPEG conversion command in the NeatClick menu.
- Select the resulting JPEGs for the next action. Use Make Under if a form has a file-size limit, or Resize Exactly if it specifies pixel dimensions.
- If removing private information, run Remove Location Only or Strip Metadata on the final sharing copies and inspect them before upload.
Example: a website accepts JPG below 2 MB
Convert using Actual Size first so you retain the available detail. If the resulting JPEG exceeds 2 MB, reduce export quality in Preview or apply a Make Under target to the JPEG copy. Check any minimum pixel dimensions separately.
Renaming a filename from .heic to .jpg does not convert its contents. JPG and JPEG are names for the same image format; a site’s filename validation may nevertheless require one particular extension.
What conversion does not preserve
A JPEG cannot improve source detail or preserve every HEIC capability. It uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. A still-image conversion also does not deliver the motion portion of a Live Photo. Keep your source library for future edits and exports.
For a batch, compare the number of sources and outputs and spot-check images with bright highlights, skin tones, and fine detail. If one item fails, verify that it is downloaded and opens on its own before retrying.
Frequently asked questions
Can Mac convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select multiple HEIC files before running Finder’s Convert Image Quick Action.
Does JPG improve image quality?
No. Conversion changes compatibility and storage characteristics; it cannot add detail that was not in the source.
